Market Day was in the past a great occasion for farming families to make a rare visit to a town, sell their food produce, shop in the local all-purpose store, consult with the solicitor or bank manager, do a bit of match-making, have a few drinks with friends in the pub,  take part in games on the common green or enjoy all the fun of the fair when it was in town. Monivea in Co. Galway still holds an annual Fair Day in late August that captures some of the essence of those halcyon bygone days as these photographs amply demonstrate
