Visit to the 15th century Ballymore Castle & the adjoining early

19th century Georgian mansion

The children from the picturesque little plantation town of Lawrencestown (Baile Mór Shíol Anmchadha) in county Galway filmed their visit to the nearby historical Ballymore demesne to talk to its owner Murty Naughton about the history of the 15th century castle & its adjoining early 19th century Georgian mansion.

The castle was originally a 15th century tower house owned by the powerful local O’Madden clan. It seemed to have been extensively rebuilt by 1585 by an Englishman John Lawrence when he acquired the surrounding lands through his marriage to a daughter of the O’Maddens. As a result of the wars that followed over the next century,  it was damaged and repaired a number of times It also experienced different owners including Thomas Newcomen, Nicholas Cusack and  the Eyres  of Eyrecourt. The Seymour family  took up residency in the castle in 1700 and remained there until the early part of the 20th century. Murty Naughton’s father bought the demesne in the late 1940s.
