‘Óró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile’ was orginally a 18th century Jacobite song known as Séarlas Óg (“Young Charles”) and referred to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the failed Scottish rebellion of 1745-6. Padraig Pearse provided new verses to it in the early 1900s dedicated to Gráinne Ní Mháille, the legendary 16th century Connaught pirate queen. It soon became a popular Irish rebel song as well as later a marching tune for the Irish Army.
